Great is thy Faithfulness

I grew up in a rural Christian community in Northern Indiana. The church I attended was a family driven church of about 200 members, known for its longevity in the community and the faithful people who attended it. We were a traditional church, and each week the song leader asked us to take out our hymnals and turn to some of the foundational songs of our tradition. These songs included Amazing Grace, A Mighty Fortress, and many more. The one I am thinking about today, however, is Great is thy Faithfulness. Here is the refrain of the song:

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!Morning by morning new mercies I see;all I have needed thy hand hath provided;great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

These words sum up my feelings for 2009. The excitement for 2010 is high because of the faithfulness of God, and an army of faithful people we witnessed in 2009. I want to share with you some of the good things that have happened over the last few months and give you ways to pray about The Refuge for Women – as we enter 2010.

In February of this year a Board of Directors was formed that became the gatekeepers for the ministry. If you go to the website www.refugeforwomen.org and click on “About Us” and “Board of Directors” -- you will see a list of our board and some background information of each of them. They are a talented and diversified group of passionate individuals whose desire is to see God’s purposes fulfilled in the city and beyond. I am so thankful for their commitment to be involved on the front lines of Kingdom advancement.

In August the hammers began breaking down the walls of a house donated to the ministry for transformation purposes. Forty volunteers showed up on two different Saturday mornings to help with demolition and rehabbing the farmhouse. The work has continued, with volunteers building new walls; installing electric, plumbing, HVAC; and much more. Scott Zoekler has led the charge as point person for the project and has donated many hours to oversee the project to near-completion with excellence. Insulation and drywall are next and the house is on schedule to be completed in February. The location will offer peace and stillness our guests will treasure, and a perfect location for healing. Thanks to all who have sacrificed in the process through labor, as well as many who have purchased items to make the house a real home. Every part of this process is critical to the final outcome – a safe haven where each woman will know she is loved and valued.

October 27 we held our first public event for the ministry. Our desire for the night was to inform, inspire, and involve as many people as possible in what we feel God desires for these women. Those goals were met, and even surpassed, as 450 people endured bad weather and a contagious flu bug to attend! There was an palpable energy in the room, and an overwhelmingly positive response to the ministry. Pledge cards were submitted by people donating their hard-earned money to a cause they believe strongly in, and many people signed up to cover the ministry in prayer. And numerous skilled volunteers signed up to help with the actual re-building of the facility. The testimonies that circulated in days following the event gave witness to God’s presence throughout the evening. Thanks to everyone who participated and especially to the ladies who shared their stories on video or paper, giving attendees an inside look at the darkness of this industry. You are much appreciated! If you didn’t get a chance to read these stories, a few of them are available on our website.

The response of anxious volunteers led us to host a jewelry making event as a way to involve volunteers, raise additional awareness in the community, and generate revenue for the ministry. Volunteers showed up on November 30 and December 1 from all walks of life to make 4,500 bracelets. The bracelets are accomplishing more than we could have imagined. I realized how many people are aware of them when I went door to door in our own neighborhood and multiple neighbors were already familiar with the bracelets and ministry. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Volunteers also began helping leadership prepare job descriptions to locate called passionate workers to serve the women God is leading to our ministry. The response of resumes received has been amazing, and we aim to have staff in place by February. I am serving as Executive Director; and we are in the process of hiring an administrative assistant, program manager, and house manager. Please keep this process in your prayers.

Another blessing in the last few weeks has been the completion of the headquarters for the Refuge for Women. A generous family at Southland Christian Church graciously donated office space at 342 Waller Ave. It has since been painted and furnished by volunteers, and the offices are open! As the administrative site for The Refuge for Women, the offices will serve as the entry point for each individual desiring to enter the ministry. God has given us a location easily accessible to all who may be sent our way. What a blessing!

As we end 2009 the phone has been ringing with greater frequency by individuals seeking help. I believe as we approach March 1 the need will increase. I believe we are in the middle of something big -- more than simply helping 5-7 individuals at a time – and that the ripples of this ministry will extend further than we realize. That fact is both exciting and humbling. The sex industry is rampant in our day and there has never been a time in history when more individuals have been involved. God wants to reclaim the gift of sexuality the enemy has tried to steal. It will require another level of prayer and boldness from all of us to see this come into fruition. The need is evident and the timing of God seems to be unveiling in our day.

Psalm 82:3-4 says:
3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;
maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
4 Rescue the weak and needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

I take this command seriously and I know you do to. So I end this letter as I began it --stating that God is faithful! The foundation built in 2009 will prepare us to continue on this journey in 2010. We enter 2010 with a core of monthly financial partners but we have not yet met our goal. The budget for 2010 is $170,000. We know God is faithful and will provide.

If you and your family are considering a donation in 2009, there’s still time! You can give online at http://refugeforwomen.org/donate.html or send a check to The Refuge for Women, 342 Waller Ave. Lexington, KY 40504.

Your partnership with this ministry is appreciated. Please keep us in your prayers as we fulfill the call of God for our day. We will do our best to keep you informed in 2010 of ways to pray, serve, read success stories and more.

Happy New Year!

INTERESTING!!!

I mailed a couple of packages at UPS tonight. They were willing to put a container of bracelets at their store for potential buyers. I asked one of the employees if any of them had sold. She replied, "oh are you the person that is doing this?" I said that I was and she said, "that is a very.....INTERESTING.... mission." With a smile on my face i agreed and tried to assure her that it wasnt one you hear of everyday.
I
love when the word INTERESTING gets used. It is such a, I dont know what to say, word. I think it is awesome and the uncomfortableness is probably healthy. It causes people to stop and reflect and ask questions. The question gets asked, "Why do you feel like you need to help those people in there?" Inwardly you are thinking I thought you would never ask.

1 Peter 3:14-16
14But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear[a]; do not be frightened."[b] 15But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

Keep your eyes open for that word INTERESTING. It is a door waiting to be walked through.

Word of God

It never ceases to amaze me how God gives you each day just what is needed. This morning's word was so relevant for the day to prepare me for the needs of the day. God is so good and as Psalm 145 reminds us that all of his promises are true and applicable. If I will sit still long enough each morning and digest the manna He has for the day it is enough and it meets the needs. It is an anchor that gets dropped in the water and keeps us steadfast through the days storms. It is a set of lenses that keeps faith at the forefront and the natural thinking behind. I love it!!!

Prayer Warriors

God has the ability to call folks to pray through means that are hard to figure. My wife and I recently met with an individual, whom I had never met, that said she had come across our website for the Refuge for Women. Her company had been praying about a women's ministry to be involved with and they felt this was it. They decided before approaching us about our needs that they would fast and pray for God's confirmation. When we met she told me that our company has been praying for your ministry and fasting one day a week for that last 6 weeks. We want to be involved!!!!
Fasting and praying for the last 6 weeks without ever even talking about the Refuge for Women to anyone? It confirmed once again that God can raise worshippers from rocks and he can call intercessors to action. He is able to orchestrate my life and your life in ways we could never have done ourselves. Thank God for those who are praying for you today....you may just not know them by name.

The Dollar Club

A friend helped me realize today that it had been 3 weeks since i had blogged. Not Good!!!
What an amazing couple of weeks that it has been. Volunteers made over 4200 bracelets in the last 10 days that look amazing. They each have an information tag on them that talk about the Refuge and our desire to help women leave the industry. Around 220 volunteers participated with mostly women but a few guys involved. The best was being at LCA and seeing some of the state champion football players intensely making bracelets with candy at stake for the winners. All ages participated and multiple churches contributed. It is awesome watching the body of Christ work in unity and come together for something bigger than one person or church can contain.

Our offices were completed yesterday on Waller Ave by a group of volunteers as well. The deadline was 4:00 pm because the board of directors was meeting in there to see the offices for the first time. I was pulling out the sweeper from the offices when the first board member arrived. The last picture was hung after 3 board members had arrived. It was done at exactly the time it was needed. Praise God!!! Thank you to those who stripped walll paper, painted, decorated, hauled furniture and more.

Today I had the opportunity of watching one of the girls get selected for the dollar club at Southland. She was presented with a brand new 2004 Grand Am. Watching her excitement was priceless. She will be attending college in January and finding positive employment. God is at work. I will try to slow down and do a better job of recording it. We are still believing the staff will be in place in February and the doors of the house will open March 1 2010.

Good word for today

Come Out of the Stronghold TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman 11-18-2009

"...Do not stay in the stronghold. Go into the land of Judah ..." (1 Samuel 22:5). David and his fighting men had been hiding in the cave of Adullam. He was fleeing Saul. Many of life's down-and-out had come and joined David's army. David was content to stay in the stronghold of safety. Then, God's prophet came to David and told him that he must leave the stronghold and go into the land of Judah. Judah means "praise." When life beats down on us and we get to the place where we want to hide in a cave, God often places people around us who prod us into moving in the right direction. He does not want us to remain in the place of discouragement. He wants us to move into the land of praise. I recall when I went through a very difficult time. It seemed to drag on and on with no change until finally I wanted to retreat to a cave and forget pressing on. It was a great time of discouragement. A godly man came to me and said, "You must keep moving! There are too many who are depending on you in the Kingdom." I didn't totally understand what he meant at the time. Now I know he was saying that God is preparing each of us to be the vessel He wants to use in the life of another person, but we will never be that vessel if we give up and hide in our cave of discouragement. Not only must we keep moving, we must move into a new realm. Our attitude must move from discouragement to praise. "He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners - to comfort all who mourn. ... a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor" (Isa 61:1-3). It is only when we move past discouragement to praise that we begin living above our problems. Make a decision today to go into the land of Judah.

Challenges

Thank the Lord today for the challenges you are facing. 1 Peter 1 says that struggles produce Godly traits in us that only come through this channel. While in Washington D.C. recently I read a t shirt that had a quote on it from the Marine Corps. It said "Pain is weakness leaving the body". i dont like to view pain this way but for me it has been the prescription to help me equip me with endurance. It is through the challenges I face that my spiritual muscles develop. The struggle of today is preparing you for the challenges of tomorrow.

Reminder

One of the individuals the Refuge has been serving rededicated her life to Jesus on Saturday night at a worship service. In the midst of fundraising, construction, communications, team building and more what a great reminder of what the ministry is about. A relationship with Jesus!!!

Praise The Lord!

I went to Helping Through Him this morning to get a truck to move furniture down to the new office. When I walked into the storage facility an individual I hadnt seen in a while had heard about the Refuge for Women and was really excited. He asked me if I happened to need a plumber for the project on the house. I quickly told him we had been praying for a plumber and had not located one yet. He told me a friend of his had a local plumbing business and he was recruiting him to help us. He gave me the phone number of the individual and this afternoon we made contact with each other. It looks like the plumbing need is taken care of. What a week of God putting skilled laborers in our path to complete the house.

Divine Appointment

When Jon Weece announced from stage this past weekend at Southland that the Refuge for Women was officially beginning it ignited some buzz. A woman who was very excited contacted me and said she wanted to be involved in the ministry. She said that she wanted to cover any needs the girls may have with hair cuts. This is what she does for a living and that could be a way for her to serve. Oh by the way she adds, I am out of the adult entertainment industry as well, and would be willing to let you use my story in any way that would benefit the ministry. Wow!! What a divine appointment. I am starting to realize this ministry is not only going to affect women in the industry but those out of it already. I discussed the idea with a woman this morning of having a monthly support group for those who are out and want to connect with women in similar circumstances for ongoing encouragement. She loved the idea and said it had already been being talked about amongst several of the women. God was already at work!!

Another Step

Talked to an individual today who owns an electrical company in town. He has decided to do the electrical work for the farmhouse at no expense. He even has a lot of the needed materials that he is going to provide. We have prayed for someone to get a vision for this ministry and help us out with the electrical and plumbing needs. It seems like 50% of the prayer has come to pass. Praise God!! I am excited to report when the other half comes to pass as well.

Still Reflecting...

I don’t know exactly all that happened last Tuesday night at the Refuge for Women launch but I know it was important. Stories with emotion are still being told about the event. I think God showed up in a powerful way and touched the hearts of all that were in attendance.
I will never forget the comments of one of the girls out of the industry when she couldn’t believe that 450 people would show up for strippers. She commented that “we are the lowest of the lowest in society.” How sad! The feelings of value were so low that she didn’t feel worthy to have people care to that degree. It especially amazed her when everyone applauded for those in attendance who had been stung by this industry. It was an applause that said you matter and we are here for you.
I told the women it was their cries to God for help that has us here tonight. He heard their cries and activated the Body of Christ to be the solution. We serve an amazing God that is in the business of restoring value to those who have had it stripped away. God is Good! He is the God who restores what the enemy attempted to steal.

If you would like to read some of the stories of the women who wrote out their journey's go to www.refugeforwomen.org

A Father's Blessing

Today was my last staff meeting as a member of the staff at Soutland Christian Church. I will be launching full time into the Refuge for Women in 3 weeks. At the end of the meeting today Gary Black asked me to come forward to pray over me. Gary has played a significant role in multiple ways in the Refuge for Women coming into fruition. I see him as a faithful man of God but also as a mentor and a spiritual father/mentor in my life. It was a gift to have him say a blessing and give a commissioning for the assignment. One more gift from the Heavenly Father through the hands of an earthly father.

The Body Of Christ

A phrase that God keeps putting in my heart is "Do Your Part". The Body of Christ can accomplish much when everyone does a little. As God is preparing us for the Refuge to open I am amazed at the willingness from people to help. This week alone I learned that a family decided to get rid of their gym membership and give that money to help the Refuge for Women. An individual sent a note this week saying she sold some maternity clothese on craigs list and wanted to give it to help transform lives. A Chiropractor approached me this week and said he would like to offer his skills for any girls that might need some work done. A landscaper wanted to know if we needed plants installed when the house is complete. A decorator wanted to know if she could help fill the home with a personal touch when the construction is done. The list goes on and on. 1 Corinthians 12:7 says "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." Verse 12 says "The body is a unity, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ." Praise God for the gifts that He has given so many people. Helping these women is a God-sized assignment that will take all people doing their part.

Lessons from a school bus

This morning I took the kids to Lowes to build a school bus. Lowes puts these projects on every other week for kids and we have attended the last three times. The kids love it and we meet some friends from church and go to Waffle House beforehand and then proceed to Lowe’s.

The projects that Lowe’s have are at a kid’s level but still require a little assistance from dad. For dads that are patient and handy that should not be a problem. However the father that God gave Nathaniel and Julianna struggles with both patience and handiness at times. This morning proved to be no different.

Julianna was working on her bus and hammering in nails that did not want to cooperate. Watching her struggle with the hammer and nails made me want to instantly relieve her of the struggle. I politely mentioned to Julianna to let me finish off the nail before she broke the wood or bent the nail beyond repair. However she did not perceive her circumstances as a struggle and wanted to do it herself. So I backed off and went back to being a spectator of a show that was not enjoyable.

As I was watching Julianna struggle it became apparent to me that what was important to me was not important to her. Time was important to me since it was taking her forever. Time did not phase her because her day was wide open. The quality of her work was also important since I could tell the school bus was not going to be done right. Quality was of little concern to her as well. She valued being able to have independence and complete a task that would give her the ability to say, “I did it all by myself.”

Why is it important for her to be able to say that she did it by herself? Wouldn’t she rather have it done right with a little assistance then to have it done wrong? The answer was quickly apparent that the confidence gained from independence outweighed all obstacles.

How many times have I wanted to intervene for someone because of my impatience? It is easy to disguise impatience with a helpful tone but in the end it is self motivated not others motivated. It is terrible watching someone struggle when you have the ability to bring them out of it. I think that is consistent with most human beings that we hate to see people struggle.

I think God is teaching me that struggling is not always bad. If you watch someone run a marathon their face tells a story of struggle. When you are in a weight room and someone is bench pressing a lot of weight you can see struggle. Struggles build qualities into our lives that can produce character and endurance. When the marathon is completed or the weight lifted the arms go in the air signifying victory and excitement.

If Julianna is okay with the struggle than who am I to say that she needs me. I want to be available if she says, “Can you help me daddy?” However I never heard those words and so I sat by chewing on my fingernails until the project was completed.

I think the lesson learned for me was to keep others before myself. People learn a lot in the midst of struggles. I see it repetitively in the world of recovery that when an individual is struggling good hearted people want to intervene because of a weak stomach to brokenness. Do we intervene to help the individual or because we are tired of watching and enduring. I think a good message for all of us to hear is “Let people struggle sometimes.” Tell them you love them and are praying for them and the best way you can help them is to push them to Jesus. We come to Jesus when we are at the end of ourselves and are tired of living the way we have lived. Until that tiredness is present we keep doing the same activities we have always done. It gets us the same results we have always gotten.

So my fingernails are gone and my stress level is high but Julianna left with a school bus that contained her handiwork and a big smile on her face. Another lesson learned on the journey of life :)

French Silk Ice Cream

I would have never thought a craving for French Silk ice cream would lead me to a divine appointment. I try to avoid Walmart as often as I can. The parking is inconvenient and everyone known to man seems to be there when I go. I would rather pay a little more at Rite Aid and avoid the headace than to save a dollar but endure the confusion. Just a pet peeve of mine. Michelle and I were wanting French Silk Ice Cream last night and the container had one spoonful left. Not nearly enough for people that love ice cream like me and Michelle. I had 10 minutes before Rite Aid closed and so I rushed next door to the store. I arrived on time but they were out of the ice cream. Instead of going home to tell my wife the bad news about the ice cream I decided to quickly run to Walmart. As I walked into the doors of Walmart I noticed my neighbor purchasing food at the check out line. She didnt make eye contact with me and so I didnt initiate a hello either. I grabbed 2 containers of French Silk ice cream since it was on sale and proceeded to the check out line. My neighbor was still in line with a discouraged look on her face. However when she saw me she got very excited. She told the check out clerk that this is my neighbor and he can attest to who I am. I asked what was going on like a courteous neighbor and if everything was okay. Low and behold she had forgotten her wallet and her son was already eating chips out of one of the bags. She had a check but no ID. They were unable to cash the check as a result. The food had been opened and so it was unable to be returned. She had called her husband but they have a baby and he was already asleep in bed. I told her I would pay for her groceries and it was no big deal. A little embarrassment on her part but all ended well. I went home and told Michelle that I think I was in the right place at the right time. I am glad now that Rite Aid didn't have the ice cream for fear that my neighbor might secretly be trying to seal up the potato chips bag and return them or still standing there in line still today.
I dont know if God had me go to Walmart last night for that very purpose but it does remind me that what I often consider an inconvenience might have the potential for a Kingdom moment. In Romans we are reminded that all things work together for good and that God is involved in the details. I don't use the word coincidence any more because I dont think there is any such thing. Instead of coincidence I like to use the word divine appointment. God orders our steps as we attempt to stay in step with the Spirit. I want to remember this because there are times I am in the check out line of life and my face is getting flushed and I am looking around wondering how this is going to work out. A good reminder is that it always does!! It ALWAYS does!!

Change on the Horizon

It is hard to believe that it has been 6 years ago that we left Lexington, Kentucky and went to live in Southern Ohio. Saying good bye to friends that were like family to us was challenging. I will never forget the sorrow of the final hugs and tears of saying good bye. We enjoyed the time in Kentucky but figured it was a short 4 year season that God had given to us. Nathaniel and Julianna were both born in Lexington and so this city would always carry precious memories with us. Little did we know that we would be back 2 and a half years later. The time at the Refuge in Ohio was life changing. Tom Thompson poured into me like a spiritual father pouring into a spiritual son. We had no idea that there was coming a day when all the life lessons would be recalled by my stepping into similar places of leadership. Michelle and I learned lessons in Ohio that have made us better parents and have a better marriage. It was a gift from God to take a short season to improve ourselves and be witness to a ministry that would give us a framework for future ministry.

The day for that ministry has arrived. I resigned from Southland Christian Church on August 13th, 2009. My last day on staff at Southland will be October 30th 2009. The timing of God is now to focus my time and energy towards Refuge For Women. This ministry is from the grassroots and will reach out to Exotic Dancers leaving the Adult Entertainment Industry. I knew God was calling us to start a Refuge when we returned from Ohio but i thought it would be to similar men that we ministered to in Ohio. It was upon meeting Jani Lewis and her telling me about a ministry that she started called Bruised Reed that I began realizing this was the people group God was calling us to minister. It would not be men but women and children.

What a journey that it has been. I thought I was ready to start this ministry 2 years ago but it is amazing how God's timing does not always align with our timing. It has been filled with excitement, anticipation, questioning, frustration, divine appointments, and much much more. God is at work and that is the most important aspect of this journey. I asked a friend to create this blog for me so that those interested can watch the ministry unfold and we can all give glory to God together. It is all about Him and His love for these precious girls has not just begun but he has been preparing the people and places for many years. Glory to His name!!!

From the time I was a kid I loved reading missionary stories of faith. God would provide in miraculous ways during times it looked bleak. Many of the stories I am going to write on this blog will be faith stories. I have faith their will be faith stories. :) I hope that all of our faith increases in days to come as God shows himself faithful.
